A Positive Approach to Behavior
Burt Township School is committed to helping every student succeed—not just in the classroom, but in how we treat one another and our school community. This year, our approach to student behavior focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive expectations, guided by the Michigan State Board of Education Model Code of Student Conduct (2019) and the restorative-first principles of Michigan's Revised School Code (MCL 380.1310c).
What This Means for Students
Our school-wide expectations are simple and clear:
Be Safe · Be Respectful · Be Responsible · Be Kind
These expectations are not just rules on a wall. Students will be taught what each one looks like, sounds like, and feels like in every setting—classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, buses, and school events. Adults model the behaviors, students practice them, and positive choices are recognized and reinforced.
When mistakes happen, we treat them as opportunities to learn. Our behavior framework emphasizes restorative practices—conversations and problem-solving that repair harm and rebuild relationships—before turning to exclusionary measures like suspension. This mirrors the state's recommendation to consider each student's circumstances individually and to use the least restrictive response that effectively addresses the behavior.
For situations that do require a formal response, our behavior matrices follow Michigan law, including consideration of the seven statutory factors and the preference for keeping students learning and connected to school whenever possible.
Creating A Partnership
Supporting positive behavior is a shared effort between students, families, and staff. Together, we're building a school culture rooted in safety, respect, responsibility, and care.
Burt Township Schools is thrilled to announce the launch of a brand-new Career and Technical Education (CTE) program this school year, made possible through our partnership with MEERA (Manufacturing and Engineering Education Reimagined for All).
This grant funded program brings real, hands-on learning into our classrooms, giving students the chance to explore manufacturing and engineering skills at an earlier age than ever before. From working with 3D printers and CNC machines to learning precision tools like calipers, students will do more than watch and listen. They'll build, design, code, and create, discovering firsthand how the things around them are made.
Why does this matter? Because students can only pursue the paths they know exist. By opening the door to manufacturing and engineering careers now, we're helping our young people see new possibilities for their futures and make more informed decisions about where they want to go. Whether a student dreams of engineering, design, or a hands-on career they haven't even discovered, this program helps them see themselves in that future.
